It seems that I’ve been talking about mostly anime recently, so today I decided to talk about a manhua that I can’t get enough of. I typically don’t read manhua, but this one is too good to pass up! I’m talking about The Legend of Sun Knight! This series doesn’t seem to be very well known, so I thought I would “share the love” because it is one of the rare ones that can appeal to both shoujo and shounen readers alike, despite the bishounen and shoujo sparkles. 😉 I’m going to give a
little long introduction to the characters, so be prepared! Hahahahaha!
The Legend of Sun Knight is a fairly recent series that started as a Taiwanese light novel by Yu Wo (best known for her debut work, 1/2 Prince). It completed in 2011 with 8 volumes. There are two spin-off series related to the main story, but I’m not going to go into depth about those. The manhua, with art by Os Rabbit Cat (Os. Rabbit. Neko), is currently ongoing with 4 volumes so far. For those unfamiliar with the term “manhua”, it’s the Chinese equivalent of manga.
The setting of our story takes place in a world full of many different gods and religions. However, the focus is on the Sanctuary of the God of Light, one of the largest and oldest beliefs in this world, and even more so on the group of young men who act as the link between the God of Light and his worshippers. This group is known as the Twelve Holy Knights. Within the group, there are two factions, each comprising of six members: the Warm-Compassionate Faction and the Cold-Merciless Faction. Each knight is known for behaving in a certain manner and having a personality “like-so”, but we find out rather quickly that the masks these men must wear to perform their duties don’t always match their true selves. The hilarity and cryptically-expressed sarcasm that ensue are some of the things that really make this manhua so much fun to read.
The Legend of Sun Knight is titled for Grisia Sun, the 38th generation Sun Knight. Obviously, this is the first knight we meet as he is the “hero” of the story. Sun (as he is often called), who is known as “The Sun Knight Most Like The Sun Knight Of Legend”, is the representative of the God of Light and leader of the Twelve Holy Knights. He is also the leader of the Warm-Compassionate Faction. The Sun Knight is known for his golden locks, his blue eyes, and his charming smile. Sun is supposed to be a kind, pure, and forgiving knight who mentions the benevolence of the God of Light in almost every sentence he speaks, no matter what he may be talking about or who he may be talking to. Simple things turn into long speeches that are confusing and as such, Sun hates talking. Sun is also not quite the person that everyone thinks he is; he’s sarcastic (who could blame him), sometimes mean/unaffected, and he loves women. His special ability is to take a “picture” of cute women with the corner of his eyes since he can’t look directly at them (being the Sun Knight who has eyes for none but the God of Light). While his mastery of magic is phenomenal (his abilities are greater than the Pope’s), his swordsmanship sucks. In fact, he’s quite pathetic as a knight, even though he is the “epitome of perfection”. He also has an enormous sweet-tooth.
The leader of the Cold-Merciless Faction is the Judgement Knight, Lesus Judgement, sometimes called Judge. The Judgement Knight is known to be the cruelest and most terrifying knight. He always speaks of the strictness of the God of Light and is responsible for prosecuting criminals and overseeing their punishments. However, Judge is actually a gentle soul and he likes to take care of others, so seeing the punishments often makes him ill. He also has to force himself to frown all the time. He is supposed to be Sun’s rival, but they are actually secret best friends (no one, not even the other knights, knows this). In many ways, he is the opposite of Sun, especially when it comes to swordsmanship, lol. Judge also likes to give sweets to Sun, since Sun often helps him out after he’s been ill. He often acts like a big brother to Sun, taking care of Sun’s “problems” and sometimes doing things that Sun has asked him to do.
A member of the Warm-Compassionate Faction, Chikus Blaze, the Blaze Knight, is probably the knight whose actual personality best matches his knightly personality. True to his name, Blaze has a fiery nature and is often hot-tempered and direct. His is very loyal to Sun and idolizes him. This is probably due to the fact that Sun once said that he was an “irreplaceable brother” (the Knight Captains often call each other brother, i.e. Brother Sun). He also has a tendency to defend Sun when others insult him.
Another member of the Warm-Compassionate Faction is the Earth Knight, Georgo Earth. A seemingly gentle, loyal, and innocent man, he always comes in first on the “Most Wanted Husband” poll. However, he is actually a huge womanizer and a bit of a jerk. It’s “common knowledge” that Earth and Sun are “the bestest of friends” and they act as such in front of everyone, but they actually hate each others’ guts. They even manage to be mean to each other while everyone else hears them having a friendly conversation, lol. Sun hates Earth because Earth can fool around with women all he wants (all while deceiving them with his sweet face) and Earth hates Sun because Sun always interrupts Earth when he is flirting with women. He also hates Sun because the ladies often speak of Sun in a “kyaa kyaa” fashion in front of Earth, and he has to totally go along with it. ^^
The person better suited to being the Earth Knight is actually the Storm Knight, Ceo Storm. He is also a member of the Warm-Compassionate Faction. Storm is very innocent and a timid person around women, but he has to act just the opposite. Known as a carefree charmer and ladies man, he has to wink at every woman he sees (no matter what she looks like). The poor guy often ends up with super swollen eyes from all his required winking. He is also supposed to be flippant about work, skipping meetings when he can and such, but he’s actually a bit of a workaholic (the other knights sometimes dump their work on him). He’ll say he’s going on a date when he’s actually going to do work. He must constantly dye his hair blue as well, since legend has it that the first Storm Knight had blue hair. Apparently, all this hair-dying has caused many of Storm’s predecessors to get some sort of cancer and die. D: He also helps out Sun a lot by saying the things Sun wants to say for him in a direct manner, so that Sun doesn’t talk so much.
Ecilan Frost is the Frost Knight and a member of the Cold-Merciless Faction. He must have a cold personality, be void of emotion, expressionless, and not talk much. In fact, he hates talking. But this actually works very well for Sun, and they are very good (secret) friends for this reason. Frost is very kind and loves to make sweets for others, especially for Sun. And since he doesn’t talk much, he can just walk up to Sun, give him the sweets (which makes Sun happy), walk away, Sun doesn’t have to really say anything (which makes Sun even happier), and everyone thinks they are bickering like they should be, lol. It’s like a perfect symbiotic relationship! ^_^
One of the few Warm-Compassionate Faction knights that Sun actually likes is Elmairy Leaf, the Leaf Knight. He is another knight whose true nature is the same as the knight’s nature. The Leaf Knight is supposed to be a good person, and Leaf genuinely is a good person. In fact, he may be naturally more good-natured than his knightly counterpart, lol. Sun often comments on how nice Leaf is. That is, until he holds a bow. Leaf is an expert archer (he always has a quiver of arrows on his back) and Sun says that once Leaf holds his bow, he becomes a scary person, lol.
Another member of the Cold-Merciless Faction is the Metal Knight, Laica Metal. While we don’ know much about him (except that his insults aren’t very insulting… Sun was better at insulting himself than Metal was, lol), he is supposed to be sharp-tongued and rude. There is a rumor that states that if you hear three sentences spoken by this knight, your life with shorten by six months. That’s kind of scary, but from what I’ve seen so far, I don’t think it’s possible, ^^.
The last member of the Warm-Compassionate Faction is the Cloud Knight, Demos Cloud. He never stays in one place for long and he loves books. His presence is hard for the other knights to detect, so he often sneaks up on people and scares them, without meaning to. He can also leave without them noticing, so they are left talking to no one, lol.
The only member of the Cold-Merciless Faction that is under Sun’s command is the Hell Knight, Elijah Hell. Even though he is under Sun, he actually takes all of his orders directly from the Pope. He specializes in espionage and has never been seen in public as the Hell Knight, so no one knows who he actually is. As such, he has never participated in any of the required duties of the other knights or helped out in any other way. He’s a bit of a mystery. I hope more will be revealed about him later.
The last two knights of the Cold-Merciless Faction are the Stone Knight and the Moon Knight. We have not been introduced to them yet, so I can’t say any more on the matter. I can, however, show you what they look like! ^^ Just look at the Members of the Cold-Merciless Faction image below!
There are two more characters in the story who often play a part. One is Pink, a really, really old necromancer that offers her services to Sun when he needs to fight off some undead for his job. She is determined to make Sun her pupil, since she only has to show him necromancy once and he can perform it perfectly. The other is Roland, a childhood friend of Sun’s who was also a candidate to become the 38th Sun Knight. Apparently, Sun was chosen only because of his blond hair. Roland was a better knight overall, but his hair was light brown. Roland became a Death Knight due to the reason he died. Pink is the one who brought Roland back from the dead. I think these two are going to become more important later on, but right now, they are very much side characters, lol.
Hahaha, that was a lot! Wow! I didn’t think it would be that long! ^^
TOO LONG; DIDN’T READ: I highly recommend this manhua, to everyone. The art is good, the story is excellent, and the pacing is nice. Don’t be scared off by the shoujo sparkles!! They really do add to the humor of the story, I promise. I am also really enjoying the interactions between all the characters. There is a lot going to in most of the conversations and the hidden meanings and sarcasm make for a really funny story. There is a lot of depth to the characters and the flashbacks to when they were children really adds some spice to the story. If you do decide to pick this story up and read it (which I really think you should!) or if you already read it/tried to read it, let me know what you think!
Until next time,
